Elements of a Video Production Team (And What They Do)

President

The president leads and supervises the execution of all projects, ensuring their strategic direction, quality, and success. They also hire, train, and manage the company’s staff, which includes producers, editors, and videographers. After landing a new client, the president hands the reins over to the producer assigned to the project. At ASR Media, our president, Katie Santana, oversees all aspects of production to ensure the project is created on time, within budget, and in line with the client’s creative vision. 

Producer

A producer acts as a dedicated project manager to handle every aspect of the production, from scripting to post-production. They are the point of contact for clients and work to understand their needs and creative expectations. At ASR Media, we have two producers. Our VP of production, Stephanie Mettler, works with the president, director of photography, and VP of post-production throughout the project's duration to ensure efficient project completion. 

Director of Photography

The director of photography (DP) sets the video’s visual tone. They oversee everything in the camera department, working on storyboards, shot lists, and shooting schedules for a project. The DP collaborates closely with other departments, like lighting and sound, to capture a great shot. They are leaders on set, delegating tasks and communicating responsibilities to foster a smooth production experience. 

Film Crew

The film crew includes camera operators, lighting technicians, and audio technicians. Camera operators work closely with the DP to set up the perfect shot and capture the b-roll. Audio is just as important as video to production, and a professional, dedicated audio technician is responsible for recording sounds on-set and monitoring and adjusting levels as needed. Finally, a lighting director coordinates the necessary lighting to capture the film’s vision as the client and producer have decided.

Although the DP often fills the role of a camera operator on small teams, larger crews may have a dedicated camera operator and an audio technician, boom operator, and lighting director. At ASR Media, our DP, Ethan Arner, simultaneously manages multiple production aspects in addition to camera operation, including lighting and audio.

Editor 

Once the production wraps up, the producer brings all footage and other assets to the editor, who manages post-production. In post-production, the editor takes the footage captured by the camera operator, audio, and other elements and works them into the finalized video project. At ASR Media, our VP of Post-Production, Abby Mutschler, works with and oversees all other editors to guarantee we meet client expectations and industry standards.
